TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of the Indonesian Government Communications Agency (Bakom), Muhammad Qodari, stated that Indonesia's inaugural rice exports to Malaysia demonstrate how efforts to achieve food sovereignty are creating opportunities to supply international markets.
In a written statement released in Jakarta on Monday, Bakom Head Muhammad Qodari noted that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with Malaysia for 1,000 tons of premium Indonesian rice paves the way for potential exports reaching 200,000 tons, valued at up to Rp3.4 trillion.
"Rice shipments to Malaysia, coinciding with the 81st anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia's independence, give renewed optimism that the nation is increasingly food sovereign," Qodari said.
This initial export to Malaysia marks a positive milestone for the domestic agricultural sector. While prioritizing domestic market supplies, Indonesia is gradually carving out space to satisfy foreign demand in a calculated manner.
He explained that rising output allows Indonesia to elevate its standing within the global food system. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) projects Indonesia's rice production to reach approximately 38.6 million tons in 2026/2027, representing a 4.6 million ton increase from 34 million tons in 2024/2025.
With domestic consumption estimated at around 31 million tons in 2026, this surplus strengthens national food security while opening broader export avenues.
The FAO ranks Indonesia as the world's fourth-largest rice producer, trailing only India, China, and Bangladesh. Indonesia is one of the few major agricultural producers sustaining output growth while other global leaders face production hurdles.
"The government guarantees that rice exports to Malaysia will not compromise domestic consumer needs. The government continues to prioritize supply adequacy and national food stability," Qodari emphasized.
Indonesia's national rice reserves currently stand at approximately 5.2 million tons. Given these inventory levels, state food reserves remain secured through May 2027.
However, Qodari stressed that opening export channels should not be considered the ultimate objective. "What's more important is ensuring sustainable productivity increases, maintaining affordable prices and supplies for the public, expanding market access, and how all these achievements can improve farmers' welfare," Muhammad Qodari concluded.
