TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Brunei has been experiencing hazy conditions as numerous hotspots were detected across the island of Kalimantan, particularly on the Indonesian side, according to Antara, citing Xinhua.

The number of hotspots has surged in three days. On Thursday, August 27, satellite imagery from the ASEAN Specialized Meteorological Center (ASMC) detected 514 hotspots in Kalimantan. On Friday, the hotspots more than doubled into 1,734, and again rose to 1,180 on Saturday.

The report was issued in a joint press release by Brunei's Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation, Ministry of Health and Meteorological Department on Sunday.

These hotspots are largely concentrated in the western part of Kalimantan, particularly in Central Kalimantan and West Kalimantan provinces.

The ministry stated that southwesterly winds blowing towards Brunei carry haze from predominant hotspots, significantly contributing to the current haze conditions.

Despite the haze, the Pollutant Standard Index values recorded at air quality monitoring stations in all four districts in Brunei remained within the good to moderate range.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian government claimed on Monday that the number of hotspots recorded across several locations has declined.

For example, according to Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni, the number of hotspots detected in Central Kalimantan was 300, after recording more than 1,000 hotspots in two days.

In West Kalimantan,  the number of fire hotspots was down from 800 to 400, while Riau is now void of any hotspots.

Despite this, the Indonesian government warned that the risk remains present, especially across peatland areas, where fires can leave smoldering embers beneath the ground. Thus, the cooling and wetting process must be repeated intensively to ensure the ember does not develop into another fire spot.
