TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - For adults, stepping away for a midday break often feels like an unattainable luxury. Yet research shows that relaxation techniques can curb burnout, anxiety, and depression while lowering blood pressure and improving sleep quality.

Maaliyah Symone, a Reiki practitioner based in New York, is working to address this widespread fatigue phenomenon. She founded Club Rest Stop, a dedicated social club designed specifically for exhausted individuals.

Through this cost-free initiative, busy urbanites, particularly Gen Zers, are invited to gather once a month with a single objective: to unwind and rest collectively.

"People always have the same complaints about how they’re burnt out. They don’t know how to rest on their own," Symone explained, as cited by Real Simple.

"We were taught pretty much everything else in school except how to rest. We’re always taught how to be productive, how to do more, and how to achieve more. But how do we do that if we’re all burnt out?"

What Happens During a Rest Club Gathering?

Every Club Rest Stop gathering offers a unique experience. Symone explained that each event zeroes in on one of seven distinct dimensions of rest: physical, mental, sensory, creative, emotional, social, or spiritual.

Typically hosted in public parks, sessions begin with a brief presentation on the specific form of rest being practiced, led either by Symon or invited specialists. Following the brief instructional session, participants are encouraged to enjoy their personal downtime within a serene setting.

Why Is Resting Together More Effective?

From a psychological standpoint, this communal atmosphere normalizes the practice of slowing down, evoking childhood memories of mandatory afternoon naps.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker HJ Cho noted that contemporary adult culture frequently misconstrues rest as an earned reward, granted only after physical or mental exhaustion sets in.

"In preschool, no one questions whether a nap is deserved, because we know it’s needed. As adults, we still have the physical, emotional, and mental need for rest, but the framework has been lost in a culture that views rest as something to be granted through exhaustion," said Cho.

For individuals plagued by guilt during moments of downtime, resting alongside others offers an effective remedy.

Resting together can also reduce guilt. "Resting alone can be difficult because we have to answer to our inner critics in the silence as to whether this rest is earned or justified, and thus acceptable," explained Cho.

Additionally, being near calm individuals naturally triggers a sense of safety within the nervous system. This tranquility spreads physiologically, allowing the brain and body to truly relax.

Although this initiative started in New York, Symone hopes people will form similar communities in their own environments. "The whole point of social clubs is to find other people who are doing the activity that you love to do or that you want to do more," she concluded.
