TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Minister of Social Affairs, Saifullah Yusuf, said the government aims to lower extreme poverty to 0 percent by 2026, and the national poverty rate to drop below five percent by 2029.

"Currently, the national poverty rate averages at 8.57 percent," said the Minister during a working visit to the Banyuwangi Regent's Office, East Java, on Friday, April 18, 2025.

He mentioned that there are currently three provinces with the highest number of poor residents, namely East Java, Central Java, and West Java. Therefore, Gus Ipul stated that the central government is implementing various programs to reduce the poverty rate, one of which is the People's School program.

The People's School program is part of the efforts to equalize access to education in all regions under the authority of the Ministry of Social Affairs. "We hope that this program will have a significant impact on reducing the poverty rate," he said.

Saifullah Yusuf praised Banyuwangi’s successful poverty alleviation programs, which have reduced its poverty rate below the national average.

"I appreciate Banyuwangi for its good performance, especially in poverty reduction," he said.

Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani stated that efforts to address poverty in Banyuwangi have become a collective awareness, and poverty alleviation is carried out by engaging many parties.

"All parties are involved in poverty alleviation in Banyuwangi, with many programs, both long- and short-term. Our hope is to continue reducing the poverty rate in Banyuwangi and support the targets set by the central government," said Ipuk.

Data obtained from Antara shows that with various implemented programs, the poverty rate in Banyuwangi dropped from 7.34 percent in 2023 to 6.54 percent in 2024. Additionally, the extreme poverty rate in Banyuwangi also went down from 0.43 percent in 2023 to 0.29 percent in 2024.
