TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Since the Covid-19 pandemic, Saiful Mujani has commuted between his office in Menteng, Central Jakarta, and his home in Rancamaya, Bogor, West Java. Though the drive takes more than an hour, he prefers staying in the quiet residential complex with little traffic. Only occasionally does the founder of Saiful Mujani Research and Consulting (SMRC) stay at his old house in South Tangerang, Banten.
At his spacious home overlooking hills and mountains, Saiful received Tempo on Thursday, April 16, 2026. He served Gayo coffee on a long table in his living room. Each day, he drinks the Arabica coffee from Gayo, Aceh, up to five times. Wherever he goes, including abroad, he always brings Gayo coffee with him.
Saiful invited Tempo to his home because he could not come to the SMRC office, a survey and political consulting firm. For three consecutive days, the office had been swarmed by crowds. Saiful was forced to give all his employees time off. “Only the security guards are there,” said the professor of political science at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University in South Tangerang.
The mob action followed Saiful’s remarks at the event Before Observers Are Disciplined at the Utan Kayu Community in Jakarta on Monday, March 30, 2026. He said that removing President Prabowo Subianto—who had earlier stated he would “discipline” analysts—could save Indonesia. Saiful was later reported to the police on allegations of inciting resistance against the government.
