Fact Check: No New Rupiah Banknotes Featuring Prabowo and Gibran to Be Issued in June 2026

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A number of images claiming to be new rupiah banknotes circulated on Instagram [archive], Facebook, TikTok, X, and YouTube in the first week of June 2026. The posts featured the Garuda Pancasila symbol and the Bank Indonesia (BI) logo.

There were three versions of the image, depicting President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, with denominations of Rp18,000 (two models) and Rp1,000,000.

However, is the image really the new design for the rupiah banknote introduced by BI?

FACT CHECK

Tempo verified the content using an artificial intelligence (AI) content scanner and compared it with credible information. The results showed that the images were purely digitally fabricated. Bank Indonesia did not release the new banknotes in early June 2026.

Through its official Instagram account, Bank Indonesia confirmed that the visuals of the note are counterfeit. The public can check the official banknote design on the Rupiah menu on the website www.bi.go.id.

"The Rp18,000 Rupiah note you attached is not available, and Bank Indonesia has never issued this denomination," Bank Indonesia wrote in a written statement on Monday, June 15, 2026.

Bank Indonesia (BI)'s official website and social media do not contain information regarding the issuance of new banknote designs or currency redenomination. Pursuant to Law Number 7 of 2011 concerning Currency, Bank Indonesia holds full authority, from planning to the destruction of the rupiah, which must be officially announced to the public.

Bank Indonesia must undertake several steps to fulfill this responsibility, including coordinating with various government agencies and announcing to the public when launching new banknotes.

The Rp18,000 banknote depicting a Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) menu was detected as a 99.8 percent imitation by the Zhuque AI Detection Assistant. Decopay.ai and Undetectable.ai also confirmed the image as a digital imitation because it includes food elements that are unusual for currency.

"This banknote displays a blend of traditional currency elements with unusual food-related imagery, blending authentic design features with creative content (engineered elements)," Decopay.ai wrote in its statement.

Another image of a Rp1,000,000 bill was also detected as 99.9 percent artificial by Hive Moderation, with indications of using the Imagen4 (Google DeepMind) model at 55.4 percent and Gemini at 44.4 percent. However, Gemini denied these claims.

"This doctored image did not originate from Google's AI, but was created by an internet user using another AI generator," reads the Gemini test results.

Meanwhile, the Zhuque AI Detector Assistant stated a 98.26 percent probability that the image was synthetic content.

The distribution of these images is suspected to be satirical and to criticize the rupiah's depreciation against foreign currencies from May to mid-June 2026.

CONCLUSION

Tempo's verification concluded that the claim of new Rp18,000 and Rp1,000,000 notes being issued in June 2026 is false. The circulating images are artificial intelligence (AI)-generated visuals.
