TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A letter arrived at the Office of the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy in the Lapangan Banteng area of Central Jakarta, addressed to Deputy for Economic Cooperation and Investment Coordination Edi Prio Pambudi. Dated January 10, 2026, the letter was electronically signed by L. Amrih Jinangkung, Director-General for Legal Affairs and International Treaties at the Foreign Ministry. Amrih outlined six points of concern regarding the draft agreement on reciprocal trade (ART) with the United States.
His views referred to the results of an internal Foreign Ministry meeting chaired by Deputy Foreign Minister Arif Havas Oegroseno on January 9, 2026, attended by Indonesia's Ambassador to the United States, Dwisuryo Indroyono Soesilo, and several senior Foreign Ministry officials. Amrih wrote that the latest draft of the trade agreement he had received—reflecting negotiations on December 22, 2025—remained one-sided and imposed unilateral obligations on Indonesia. "The continuation of negotiations must ensure that the ART regulates balanced obligations for Indonesia and the United States," the letter stated.
The letter was sent just before the departure of the Indonesian government's negotiation team, led by Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto, to Washington, D.C., where they were scheduled to discuss and finalize the draft Indonesia-United States Trade Agreement. Amrih therefore laid out his views in detail and offered recommendations on the positions the Indonesian government should take.
In his sixth point, Amrih advised that negotiations should consider various factors, including the domestic legal process challenging President Donald Trump's tariff policy, which was then under review at the Supreme Court of the United States.
