TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bassem Naim, a member of the political bureau of Hamas, has condemned the United States' plan to turn Gaza into a tourist site. Naim stated that the plan is unacceptable. As reported by Middle East Monitor, he firmly said, "Gaza is not for sale."
Naim emphasized that Gaza is not just a city on the map or a forgotten geography. Gaza is an inseparable part of the broader Palestinian homeland. He stressed that the people of Gaza and Hamas reject the U.S. plan.
According to The Washington Post, cited from Middle East Monitor, the 38-page document calls for the relocation of the population outside of Gaza. The alternative option is to confine them to a restricted zone in the Gaza Strip, while putting the area under U.S. supervision for ten years. Gaza will be developed into a tourist and technology center.
Another Hamas official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, also rejected the proposal. "Hamas rejects all schemes that displace our people while entrenching the occupier on our land. These are worthless and unjust plans." They added that Hamas has not received an official notification about this and only found out about the idea through media reports.
According to The Washington Post, the plan is related to the vision of former U.S. President Donald Trump to transform Gaza into the "Riviera of the Middle East." During the proposed reconstruction phase, the Gaza Strip will be managed by a fund named the Gaza Reconstruction, Economic Recovery, and Transformation Trust (GREAT Trust).
To relocate the residents of Gaza, the Trump administration designed a post-Gaza war plan that includes voluntary relocation of Palestinians with digital token incentives, cash payments, and food and rent subsidies elsewhere. According to the plan, landowners will be offered digital tokens as compensation for "temporary relocation," which can be exchanged for redevelopment rights, the option to move abroad, or apartment units in six to eight planned "AI-based smart cities" in Gaza.
For residents who choose to leave Gaza, promised incentives include $5,000 in cash, four years of rent subsidies, and one year of food assistance.
