TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hamas spokesperson Abdel-Latif al-Qanoua was killed in an Israeli air strike in northern Gaza. Al-Qanoua's death was announced by Hamas-affiliated media on Thursday morning, March 27, 2025.
Al-Qanoua is the latest Hamas figure to be killed since Israel continued its operations in the Gaza region. Al-Qanoua was killed when his tent was targeted in Jabalia, according to Hamas-run al-Aqsa television, as cited by Al Arabiya. The same attack injured several people, while a separate strike killed at least six people in Gaza City and one person in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, according to medical sources.
Earlier this week, Israel killed Ismail Barhoum, a member of Hamas' political office, and Salah al-Bardaweel, another senior leader. Both Bardaweel and Barhoum are members of Hamas' 20-member decision-making body. Eleven of them have been killed since the war began at the end of 2023, according to Hamas sources.
Last week, Israel ended a two-month ceasefire. Israel resumed bombing Gaza and carried out ground attacks, increasing pressure on Hamas to release the remaining hostages still held. At least 830 people, more than half of them children and women, have been killed since Israel resumed its massive military offensive in Gaza on March 18, according to the Gaza health ministry. Israel and Hamas accuse each other of violating the ceasefire. The ceasefire had been in place since January, offering a respite to the 2.3 million residents of Gaza, which has been reduced to rubble.
Hamas, which still holds 59 of the approximately 250 hostages that, according to Israel, the group captured in an attack on October 7, 2023, accuses Israel of endangering mediator efforts to negotiate a permanent agreement to end the fighting.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he ordered the attacks because Hamas had rejected a proposal to extend the ceasefire. Netanyahu reiterated his threat on Wednesday to take over territory in Gaza if Hamas fails to release the hostages still held.
