TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, has acquired energy infrastructure and data center firm Intersect in a transaction valued at US$4.75 billion, or approximately Rp79 trillion. The strategic move, announced on Monday, December 22, 2025, is designed to lock in the electricity supplies that have become increasingly critical for the operation of artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
Prior to the full acquisition, Google had already invested in various energy and data center initiatives alongside Intersect. This buyout is reportedly a foundational step in scaling the power capacity required for Google's broader and more ambitious AI projects currently under development for the future.
Alphabet Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai stated that the acquisition would enable the company to expand its data center footprint and overhaul energy solutions for its upcoming power plants. Intersect Power is widely recognized for its expertise in developing renewable energy projects specifically integrated for the needs of energy-intensive industries.
"[Intersect] will help us expand capacity, operate more nimbly in building new power generation in lockstep with new data center load," Pichai noted in a press release, as reported by Gizmodo.
This aggressive maneuver by Alphabet comes in direct response to the "power crisis" currently gripping the global technology sector. Data centers tasked with running complex AI models consume several times more electricity than those dedicated to conventional cloud computing operations.
Under the terms of the agreement, Intersect will continue to operate as a separate entity from Alphabet and Google, maintaining its own brand identity. The acquisition is expected to accelerate the development of Google’s planned AI infrastructure campuses in the Armstrong and Haskell regions of Texas, United States.
As tech giants like Google move more aggressively to secure their own energy pipelines, it is clear that energy infrastructure has become a primary target for data center investors. This shift reflects a broader industry trend where technology firms are increasingly forced to function like utility companies to survive.
By way of comparison, Amazon Web Services (AWS) recently made a massive investment by acquiring a nuclear-powered data center campus from Talen Energy for US$650 million in Pennsylvania. The objective remains the same: ensuring a 24-hour, carbon-free power supply to keep operations running without interruption.
Microsoft is pursuing a different path, signing a long-term power purchase agreement with Constellation Energy to reactivate a nuclear reactor at Three Mile Island, while also investing in nuclear fusion technology. This phenomenon confirms that in the high-stakes AI race, owning advanced chips is no longer enough without the support of a massive and self-sufficient power supply.
