TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Google has introduced a new security feature in the Android operating system that will automatically reboot a device if left unopened for three consecutive days. This feature is aimed at protecting user data and preventing unauthorized access.
Quoted from The Verge report on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, The latest Google Play services update introduces a feature where Android phones will automatically restart if they remain locked for three consecutive days. After the restart, users will need to enter their passcode to unlock the device.
This feature will put the device in Before First Unlock (BFU) state, which encrypts data and disables biometric login support until the user enters the device PIN. The reboot feature is different from a factory reset, as it does not erase data, only locking access until the passcode is entered.
According to a report from 9to5Google, this update will apply to Android phones and tablets, but will not include other devices such as Android Auto, Android TV, and WearOS.
Previously, Apple introduced a similar feature called 'Inactivity Reboot' in iOS 18.1, which triggers an automatic restart after the device has been locked for four days.
As for Google, there’s no official word yet on when the Google Play Services version 25.14 update will roll out or which Android devices will support this new auto-restart feature. Typically, updates like this take about one to two weeks to reach most users.
It also remains uncertain whether Android will notify users about the reason behind the automatic restart. However, after a reboot, Android devices currently display a message on the PIN screen requiring the user to enter a passcode to unlock the phone.
