TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Four people died while working on a multi-story building project on TB Simatupang Street, Tanjung Barat, South Jakarta. The incident occurred on Friday, April 3, 2026, at around 10:00 a.m. local time.
The Head of Public Relations at Jakarta Metro Police, Commissioner Budi Hermanto, said the four victims fell into a ground tank in the building's basement area during the draining process. "The incident occurred during the process of draining the water tank," Budi said on Friday.
Several workers were about to work on draining the closed water tank, when one of them fell into the hole while opening the tank cover.
Other workers tried to help, but they slipped due to lack of safety equipment. "During the evacuation process, witnesses said the surrounding area was suffocating and hot," said Budi in a written statement.
Rescuers evacuated the victims to the Pasar Rebo Regional Hospital, but the four workers were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. They were YN (32 years old), MW (62 years old), TS (63 years old), and MF (19 years old).
The police are still investigating the exact cause of the incident. "Officers have conducted a crime scene investigation and questioned several eyewitnesses," said Budi.
Budi emphasized that the police will investigate this case thoroughly and in a professional manner. Investigators will examine any negligence and compliance with safety standards at the project site.
Earlier, Jagakarsa Police Chief Commissioner Nurma Dewi mentioned that there were a total of seven victims in this incident. Four people died, while three others experienced shortness of breath after inhaling gas from the water tank at the construction site.
