Former Thai PM Thaksin Granted Royal Pardon, Fully Freed

1 hour ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has been fully acquitted of his sentence after receiving a royal pardon by decree, Thai Justice Minister Rutthapol Naowarat confirmed on Wednesday, as reported by ANTARA.

Speaking to the media, Rutthapol said Thaksin had fulfilled the requirements of the royal pardon decree published in the Royal Gazette on Tuesday, June 2. Therefore, Thaksin will no longer have to serve a probationary period until September 9.

According to Rutthapol, Thaksin was released immediately based on the decree that took effect the day after it was issued because he had less than a year left in his sentence.

Thaksin was released from Klong Prem Central Prison on May 11 to serve the remaining four months of his one-year sentence on parole. During that period, he is required to report monthly to the monitoring office and wear an electronic monitoring bracelet.

According to Thai media reports, the release of the electronic monitoring devices is still subject to the completion of a three-member committee review under the decree. This committee has up to 120 days to verify eligible recipients and process the necessary documentation.

Reports indicate that Thaksin must first obtain a release certificate, legal proof of his release, which also affects his criminal record and international travel restrictions. After that, he could be scheduled to visit a parole office to have the monitoring device removed.
