TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s provincial government of North Sumatra has extended its emergency response status for disaster management across all affected districts and cities, as severe floods and landslides continue to hit parts of the western Indonesian island of Sumatra.
The emergency status, which was initially due to expire on December 21, 2025, has been extended through December 31.
The extension marks the second prolongation of the emergency period and is formalized under North Sumatra Governor’s Decree, covering disasters including floods, landslides, and earthquakes across the province.
Head of the North Sumatra Communication and Information Office Erwin Hotmansah Harahap said the decision followed a coordination meeting between the provincial government and district and city administrations on December 23.
“Considering the scale of the impact, ongoing evacuations, and recovery needs in the affected areas, the provincial government has extended the emergency response status until December 31, 2025,” Erwin said, as quoted by Antara on Friday, December 26, 2025.
According to data from Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), flash floods and landslides in North Sumatra have claimed 371 lives, with 70 people still reported missing.
Erwin emphasized that the extension applies to emergency response operations, not the duration of the disaster itself. “The emergency status refers to the handling and mitigation process, not the disaster occurrence,” he said.
The governor has instructed emergency response teams and relevant agencies to continue rescue operations, evacuations, humanitarian assistance, and recovery efforts over the coming week.
The main emergency command post will remain operational, along with a logistics warehouse at the North Sumatra Provincial Government Multipurpose Building, which serves as a hub for receiving and distributing aid.
Elsewhere in Sumatra, emergency response timelines vary. West Sumatra has ended its emergency phase and shifted to rehabilitation, while Aceh has extended its emergency response status until January 8, 2026.
A BNPB report issued on Thursday, December 25, 2025, showed that nearly 490,000 people remain displaced across Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. Aceh accounts for the largest number of evacuees at 461,000, followed by 30,000 in North Sumatra and 5,800 in West Sumatra.
