TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The chair of the Indonesian football association (PSSI), Erick Thohir, was tapped as the new Minister of Youth and Sports. Replacing former Minister Dito Ariotedjo, he was inaugurated by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Wednesday, September 17, 2025.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino extended his congratulations through an Instagram post. "My heartfelt congratulations to @erickthohir on being appointed as Indonesia's new Minister of Youth and Sports of Indonesia," wrote Infantino, referring to Erick Thohir.
He lauded Erick's performance as the PSSI chief, calling it "excellent work."
Infantino is confident that Erick will bring strong leadership and vision in his new role, and drive the development of sports, especially football, among the Indonesian youths.
As the Minister of Youth and Sports, Erick Thohir now faces several major tasks. He is expected to lead Indonesia towards the 2026 World Cup and prepare the Indonesian contingent to achieve success in the upcoming 2025 SEA Games in Thailand.
Following his appointment as Minister of Youth and Sports, there have been domestic demands for Erick to resign from his post at PSSI, fearing a conflict of interest. But he stated that his future as PSSI chair will depend on FIFA.
President Prabowo Subianto appointed Erick Thohir as the new Minister of Youth and Sports on Wednesday. Currently, Erick still serves as the chair of the PSSI after being elected through the Extraordinary Congress of the PSSI in February 2023. "There will be a process in FIFA (regarding that). Yes, FIFA as the highest sports authority in the world will be the one to determine this," said Erick when met by reporters in Jakarta, Wednesday.
