TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - British police have raided two properties linked to former UK ambassador to the United States Peter Mandelson as part of an investigation following new revelations contained in recently released Epstein-related documents, authorities said on Friday.
According to CNA, the raids come amid growing scrutiny of Prime Minister Keir Starmer over his decision to appoint Mandelson as ambassador to Washington, despite being aware of Mandelson’s past association with the late U.S. financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Earlier this week, London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed they had opened an investigation into the 72-year-old Mandelson over alleged breaches of public office.
The probe follows the release of millions of documents by the U.S. Department of Justice last Friday, which reportedly show that Mandelson shared sensitive government information with Epstein while serving as a UK government minister, including during the 2008 global financial crisis.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Hayley Sewart said officers from the Metropolitan Police’s specialist crime team conducted searches at two locations on Friday—one in Wiltshire, western England, and another in London.
“The searches are related to an ongoing investigation into misconduct in public office offences, involving a 72-year-old man,” Sewart said.
"He has not been arrested and enquiries are ongoing."
Police officers were seen outside Mandelson’s central London residence on Friday afternoon.
A veteran figure in British politics, Mandelson, often nicknamed the “Prince of Darkness”, resigned earlier this week from the House of Lords, the UK’s unelected upper chamber, following the latest release of the Epstein files. He may also face the formal revocation of his peerage, which grants him a seat in Parliament.
Pressure on the Prime Minister
Meanwhile, Global Counsel, a lobbying firm co-founded by Mandelson, said on Friday that it had severed all ties with him, stating that he no longer holds any stake or influence in the firm “in any capacity.”
On Thursday, Prime Minister Starmer issued an apology to Epstein’s victims for appointing Mandelson as ambassador to the United States, though he ruled out resigning over the controversy.
Mandelson, a former cabinet minister and European Union trade commissioner, was dismissed from his ambassadorial post in September after serving just seven months, following an earlier release of Epstein-related documents.
He is among several high-profile figures facing renewed scrutiny following the latest disclosures concerning their connections to Epstein, who died in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. U.S. authorities ruled his death a suicide.
The newly released documents include email exchanges suggesting a close personal relationship between Mandelson and Epstein, along with financial dealings and allegations that Mandelson shared confidential and potentially market-sensitive information.
Mandelson is also alleged to have received financial transfers linked to Epstein, claims that remain under investigation.
Starmer said on Thursday that Mandelson had repeatedly misrepresented the nature of his relationship with Epstein during the appointment process, adding that he had previously been unaware of what he described as the “depth and darkness” of the relationship.
Documents related to Mandelson’s appointment are expected to be made public after members of Parliament voted earlier this week to authorize their release. In a letter to the relevant parliamentary committee, Starmer urged that the matter be handled “with the urgency and transparency it deserves.”
