TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Yuliot Tanjung, has announced that the government will discuss the ongoing fuel scarcity at Shell and BP stations with Pertamina and all private gas station operators.
"An instruction has been given to the Director General of Oil and Gas to convene immediately. This will be a discussion between Pertamina and businesses that require imports," Yuliot stated after attending a Working Meeting of Commission XII of the Indonesian House of Representatives in Jakarta on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
According to Yuliot, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is working to align the import needs of private gas station operators with Pertamina, citing concerns over Indonesia's trade balance. The ministry currently has detailed data on the volume of fuel imports by both Pertamina and each private gas station.
"We also pay attention to the commodity balance. We must ensure that the agreed-upon commodity balance is not exceeded," Yuliot added.
Earlier, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia had permitted private gas stations, specifically Shell and BP, to purchase fuel from Pertamina. Bahlil had previously granted private gas stations an additional 10 percent fuel import quota compared to their 2024 allocation.
Bahlil suggested that if private gas stations still face fuel shortages for distribution, they should consider purchasing fuel from Pertamina rather than relying solely on imports. He also noted that Pertamina maintains a substantial supply of fuel available for purchase by these private companies.
This statement comes in response to reports that several private gas station networks, particularly in Jakarta, have not been selling certain fuel types since mid-August. The scarcity has been noted specifically at stations operated by Shell and BP-AKR.
