TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Eight people, including several children, were killed when a kindergarten principal lost control of an SUV and drove into a pond in China’s southeast, state media reported on Wednesday, December 24, 2025.
The accident occurred Tuesday evening in Pengze County, a rural area about 480 kilometers west of Shanghai, known for its small bodies of water and interconnected streams.
According to New Security, a publication under the state-managed People’s Daily Press cited by Arab News, the SUV went off a downhill section of the road, which was likely slippery due to recent rain.
The seven-seat SUV was typically used to transport children attending a private kindergarten in the area, the report said.
“Several children from the kindergarten were in the vehicle at the time of the accident,” it said.
Authorities identified the driver as 49-year-old Luo, the kindergarten principal. A county security statement confirmed eight fatalities, including Luo, but did not provide details about the other victims. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
A local villager told New Security that his four-year-old friend was among the victims.
