TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - While receiving an award for her impact on the music industry at the 2025 WSJ Magazine Innovator Awards, Billie Eilish used her acceptance speech to call on billionaires to “give your money away.”
Before directing her remarks at the ultra-wealthy, Eilish began simply: “I'd say if you have money, it would be great to use it for good things and maybe give it to some people that need it.” She continued, “Love you all, but there’s a few people in here who have a lot more money than me. And if you're a billionaire, why are you a billionaire? No hate, but yeah, give your money away, shorties.”
Her pointed comments drew attention not only because they echoed growing concerns over the widening wealth gap in the U.S., but also because she delivered them in the presence of billionaires like Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan.
Consistently named among the richest people in the world, Zuckerberg currently holds an estimated net worth of $226 billion, according to Forbes and Newsweek. While People magazine, via Forbes, reported that Zuckerberg did not clap following Eilish’s remarks, the couple has donated more than $7 billion over their lifetimes, according to the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.
Also in attendance was another billionaire: “Star Wars” creator George Lucas, one of the world’s richest celebrities. With an estimated net worth of $5.3 billion, Lucas has donated more than $1 billion to charitable causes through his family foundation. At the event, he was honored with the design innovation award.
To her credit, Billie Eilish has also backed up her words with action. An estimated $11.5 million from her “Hit Me Hard and Soft” tour is set to be donated to The Changemaker Program, which supports climate and food insecurity initiatives. And in her own words of “there’s a few people in here who have a lot more money than me,” Billie Eilish’s net worth stands at roughly $50 million, according to The Mirror.
