TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. However, many people are unaware that they are experiencing early symptoms of heart disease. This is because some of the symptoms resemble minor conditions such as indigestion, leading to delayed medical treatment and potentially fatal risks. Here are several symptoms of heart disease that are often mistaken for indigestion.
1. Discomfort in the Chest
This is the most common sign of heart danger. If there is a blockage in the artery or a heart attack, you may feel pain, tightness, or pressure in the chest.
"Everyone has a different way of describing these feelings. Some say it feels like there's an elephant sitting on them. Some say it feels like being pinched or burned," said heart disease expert Charles Chambers, as quoted from WebMD.
These feelings usually last for more than a few minutes. It can occur when you are at rest or while doing something physically exerting.
2. Nausea, Digestive Disorders, Bloating, or Stomach Pain
Some people experience these symptoms during a heart attack. According to Chambers, they may even vomit. Women are more likely to report these types of symptoms than men.
You might experience stomach pain for various reasons unrelated to the heart. It could be due to something you ate. However, it's important to be aware that it could also happen during a heart attack.
If you experience this and are at risk of heart problems, seek immediate medical attention, especially if you also experience other symptoms on this list.
3. Shortness of Breath
Another classic symptom of a heart attack is shortness of breath. Don't immediately assume that shortness of breath is just due to being less fit. Unexplained shortness of breath that occurs with minimal activity can indicate a heart problem.
"If you climb five flights of stairs, I estimate you would experience shortness of breath. However, if you climb 10 flights of stairs and experience shortness of breath, it may indicate a heart problem," said heart expert Randall Zusman, quoted from Harvard Health Publishing.
4. Swelling in the Legs
Swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet - the kind that leaves an indentation when you press a finger into it - may be a sign of heart failure.
This swelling can also be caused by kidney or liver disease, weak veins (venous insufficiency), or side effects of some medications (especially nifedipine or amlodipine).
