TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto spoke about the much-anticipated meeting between President Donald Trump and China's Xi Jinping during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit 2025 in Gyeongju, South Korea, on Friday, October 31, 2025. Prabowo hoped their meeting would influence world peace.

"Alhamdulillah, President Trump from America met with President Xi Jinping. I also heard the atmosphere was positive, as we are hoping for, because that influences world peace. And the global economy hinges on peace," said Prabowo in South Korea on Friday, October 31, 2025, as monitored by the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube.

The head of state said the world is facing heavy challenges, with trade wars, geopolitical tensions, and regional conflict running rampant. Diplomacy, amidst this chaos, has become the key to maintaining economic stability by lowering tension and building mutual trust between countries.

"There are so many conflicts. We are trying to lower the heat," said Prabowo.

Trump and Xi had previously agreed to halt retaliatory measures in the ongoing trade war that had been pressuring the global economy. The agreement was reached during the APEC Summit in South Korea on Thursday, October 30, 2025. This was their first in-person meeting since 2019.

According to Al Jazeera reports, the meeting lasted for 1 hour and 40 minutes, shorter than scheduled. However, Trump described the meeting as "amazing" with an "outstanding group of decisions" being made. He described the outcome with a score of "12 out of 10."

As reported by NBC News, the two leaders agreed to implement a one-year trade truce. The agreement included a commitment to delay policies that could exacerbate global economic tensions.

Under the agreement, the United States would reduce tariffs on goods from China from an average of 57 percent to 47 percent.

In return, Beijing agreed to postpone the implementation of export restrictions on five types of rare earth metals announced earlier this month.

However, restrictions on seven other types that had been in place since April would remain in effect.

Rare earth metals are crucial materials for the production of strategic devices such as turbines, electric vehicles, and fighter jets. China, which controls almost all global supplies of these metals, has been using export policies as a bargaining tool in its trade relations with the United States.

Trump stated that the agreement would bring certainty to the global industry.

"All of the rare-earth issue has been resolved. And this is for the entire world, globally," he said.
