TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The coastal area of North Parigi Moutong in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, was struck by a tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8-revised from the initial reading of M5-at 06:53 AM, Wednesday, September 3, 2025. Daryono, the Director of Earthquake and Tsunami at the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), stated that the tremor scale at the epicenter in the sea reached IV MMI in Parigi. This means that the earthquake vibrations were felt by many people indoors.
"However, modeling results show that this earthquake does not have the potential to cause a tsunami," he said in an official statement shortly after the incident.
The epicenter of the earthquake was 53 kilometers northeast of Palu, Central Sulawesi. The earthquake, which is classified as shallow, with a depth of about 10 kilometers, was triggered by active fault activity. BMKG's analysis results indicate symptoms of downward movement or normal fault.
BMKG's tremor map shows that this M4.8 earthquake was also felt in Palu with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI, and in Poso with an intensity scale of III MMI, or felt in houses as if a truck was passing by. Daryono mentioned that as of 07:07 AM, there were no signs of aftershocks.
He urged the community in Parigi and surrounding areas to remain calm and monitor official information. "Check and ensure that your residential buildings can withstand earthquakes, remain intact, and stable," he added.
