TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto invited political party leaders to the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Sunday, August 31, 2025. The head of state also summoned the leaders of the People's Consultative Assembly, the House of Representatives (DPR), and the Regional Representative Council amid widespread demonstrations.
Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka was absent from the meeting. After the meeting, Prabowo held a press conference to discuss the issues with the political party and legislative leaders.
Here are three key points from Prabowo's statement:
1. Withdrawal of DPR Members' Allowance
President Prabowo Subianto stated that all political parties in parliament had agreed to withdraw the allowance for DPR members. The head of state also announced the imposition of a moratorium on official foreign trips.
Prabowo said that all party leaders had taken strong actions against their members in the DPR who had made misleading statements. According to him, these decisive actions were taken by suspending their membership in the DPR.
"Furthermore, the leaders of DPR have stated that several DPR policies, including the allowance for DPR members and a moratorium on official foreign trips, will be revoked," said Prabowo at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Sunday, August 31, 2025.
2. Demonstrations Tending Towards Terrorism
President Prabowo Subianto suspected that there were unlawful acts involved in the recent week-long series of disruptive demonstrations, such as treason and terrorism.
He stated that the public's aspirations could be expressed peacefully. The head of state claimed that the government would listen to, note, and follow up on the public's aspirations.
Prabowo also mentioned that security forces would take action against anarchists, those damaging public facilities, and those looting officials' or private residences. He stated that these actions were in violation of the law.
"The security forces on duty must protect the public and safeguard public facilities built with public funds," he said.
In addition, Prabowo stated that the government respects the freedom of expression according to the United Nations International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights Article 19 and Law No. 9 of 1998. He stated that pure expressions of aspirations should be respected.
"The right to peacefully assemble must be respected and protected. However, we cannot deny that there are indications of unlawful activities," said the Chairman of the Gerindra Party's Central Executive Board.
3. Invitation of Community Leaders and Students
President Prabowo Subianto urged the DPR leaders to welcome civil society groups and students who wish to convey their aspirations. "I will also ask the leaders of the DPR to directly invite community leaders, student leaders, in order to have a direct dialogue and be well received," he said.
The head of state also requested all ministries and institutions to accept input or feedback from various parties. "I ask all citizens to trust the government, to remain calm. The government I lead is determined to always fight for the interests of the people, including the smallest and most marginalized segments of society," said Prabowo.
Furthermore, Prabowo urged the public to maintain national unity and not to be incited. He stated that Indonesia is in the process of revival, so all parties need to be alert to the interference of groups that do not want revival.
"Voice your aspirations peacefully without riots, looting, or damaging public facilities," he said.
