TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Egypt staged a second-half comeback to defeat New Zealand 3-1, while Cape Verde held Uruguay to a 2-2 draw in a tightly contested Group H double-header of the 2026 World Cup on Sunday and Monday, June 21–22, 2026.

The results reshaped early Group H standings, with Egypt strengthening their position after a strong attacking response, while Uruguay dropped points despite leading twice in a dramatic draw against Cape Verde.

Cape Verde 2-2 Uruguay

Scorers:
Cape Verde: Kevin Pina (20’), Helio Varela (61’)
Uruguay: Maximiliano Araújo (44’), Agustín Canobbio (45+6’)

Uruguay were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw after Cape Verde produced a resilient performance at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, denying the South American side maximum points despite twice falling behind.

Uruguay dominated possession early, pushing Cape Verde deep into their half, but were punished in the 20th minute when Kevin Pina struck a powerful free-kick into the bottom corner after a foul just outside the box.

The response came just before halftime when Maximiliano Araújo levelled with a diving header from a rebound, before Agustín Canobbio completed the turnaround in stoppage time with a composed finish to give Uruguay a 2-1 lead at the break.

Cape Verde, however, refused to collapse and found their equaliser in the 61st minute through Helio Varela, who capitalised on a loose defensive moment to fire home from close range. Uruguay thought they had retaken the lead in the 68th minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Despite late pressure and added time, Cape Verde held firm to secure a valuable point.

Egypt 3-1 New Zealand

Egypt: Mostafa Ziko (59’), Mohamed Salah (68’), Trezeguet (82’)
New Zealand: Finn Surman (15’)

Egypt produced a strong second-half turnaround to defeat New Zealand 3-1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, maintaining their momentum in Group H after falling behind early.

New Zealand struck first in the 15th minute when Finn Surman headed home to give the All Whites a surprise lead, forcing Egypt to chase the game for the remainder of the first half.

After the break, Egypt increased their intensity and equalised in the 59th minute when Mostafa Ziko converted a precise cross from Mohamed Hany with a clinical header into the roof of the net.

Momentum shifted decisively seven minutes later when Mohamed Salah found space inside the box and fired a low finish into the bottom corner to put Egypt ahead 2-1.

Egypt sealed the win in the 82nd minute through Trezeguet, who powered a header from a curling Mohamed Salah corner into the post and beyond the goalkeeper, extending the lead to 3-1.

New Zealand attempted a late response through substitutions and added pressure, but Egypt’s defensive structure held firm until the final whistle.
