TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Canada secured its first-ever FIFA World Cup victory in emphatic fashion, with Jonathan David scoring a hat-trick in a 6-0 win over Qatar in Group B action at BC Place Vancouver on Thursday, June 18, 2026.
The victory marked a historic moment for the 2026 World Cup co-hosts, who moved closer to the knockout stage after collecting four points from two matches.
The Guardian reported that Canada opened the scoring in the 16th minute through Cyle Larin, who converted a rebound after an early attacking push. David then doubled the lead in the 29th minute with a powerful volley before scoring again in first-half stoppage time to give Canada a 3-0 advantage at the break.
Qatar’s hopes of a comeback faded after Homan Ahmed was shown a red card for a challenge on Tajon Buchanan, leaving the team with 10 players. Canada capitalized on the numerical advantage, with Nathan Saliba adding a free-kick goal in the 64th minute.
Qatar was reduced to nine men after Assim Madibo was sent off following a challenge on Ismaël Koné. Canada continued its dominance, with Mohamed Manai scoring an own goal in the 75th minute before David completed his hat-trick in stoppage time, FIFA reported.
David’s Hat-Trick Leads Canada to Record-Breaking Win
David’s three-goal performance made him the first player to score a World Cup hat-trick on home soil since England’s Geoff Hurst in 1966, adding another milestone to Canada’s landmark campaign.
The result also boosted Canada’s position in Group B, where the team sits on four points, level with Switzerland at the top of the standings. Qatar remains on one point after two matches.
Despite the historic win, the match was overshadowed by an injury to Canadian midfielder Ismaël Koné, who was stretchered off after the challenge that resulted in Qatar’s second red card.
A replay shared by TSN Sports showed Koné appearing in visible distress as his left leg suffered a serious injury. He was carried off the field in front of an emotional crowd at BC Place, while Qatar’s Assim Madibo was shown a red card for the challenge.
Canada coach Jesse Marsch praised his team’s performance, as the hosts delivered a memorable night in front of more than 52,000 fans at BC Place.
Group B standings after Canada vs Qatar:
Canada — 4 points
Switzerland — 4 points
Bosnia and Herzegovina — 1 point
Qatar — 1 point
