TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – At 25, British entrepreneur James Dacombe has built a career far removed from the traditional university-to-corporate path. He left school as a teenager, founded a brain-monitoring company at 17 and later turned his attention to artificial intelligence chips.

That second venture, London-based Olix, has now made Dacombe one of Europe's youngest self-made billionaires by estimated wealth after its latest funding round pushed the company's valuation to $3.3 billion.

Olix raised $312 million in August 2026 from investors including chip designer Arm, quantitative trading firm Hudson River Trading and Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings. The round, led by New York investment firm Fundomo, more than tripled Olix's valuation from just over $1 billion in February.

Dacombe founded Olix in 2024. The company is developing specialized chips designed to run AI models more efficiently, positioning itself among a growing group of startups seeking to challenge Nvidia's dominance in AI infrastructure.

From teenage programmer to entrepreneur

Dacombe grew up in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, and developed an interest in programming at an early age. He began building websites and apps as a teenager before turning his attention to technology for monitoring the human brain.

At 17, he founded CoMind, a neurotechnology company developing non-invasive brain-monitoring technology. He eventually left formal education to focus on the business rather than pursue the conventional university route.

His unconventional path later received backing from the Thiel Fellowship, a program established by entrepreneur and investor Peter Thiel that supports young people pursuing ambitious projects outside the traditional university system.

CoMind has since raised about $100 million. The company is developing technology intended to monitor brain activity without invasive procedures and has conducted trials at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, according to reports.

Dacombe continues to serve as CoMind's chief executive and holds a stake in the company.

From brain monitoring to AI chips

Dacombe's move from neuroscience to semiconductors may appear unusual, but both companies reflect his interest in technology at the intersection of hardware, software and human applications.

He founded Olix, initially known as Flux, in 2024 to develop specialized hardware for AI inference, the process through which trained AI models generate responses.

The company's central argument is that AI workloads are becoming too demanding and varied to be handled efficiently by a single general-purpose processor.

“The era of a single Nvidia chip handling every AI task was over,” Dacombe told the Financial Times, arguing that the industry was moving toward greater specialization.

Olix is developing specialized chips that use photonic interconnects, which rely on light to move data between chips. The technology is intended to reduce latency and improve energy efficiency when large numbers of chips work together.

The company says its approach could help address the growing cost and infrastructure demands of running increasingly powerful AI models.

Why Olix is attracting investors

Olix's latest funding round came amid intense competition in the market for AI chips.

Nvidia remains the dominant supplier of the processors used to train and run many AI systems, but a growing number of startups are developing specialized alternatives as demand for AI computing continues to surge.

Olix's latest $312 million round brought its valuation to $3.3 billion, up from slightly more than $1 billion after a $220 million funding round in February.

The latest investors include Arm, Hudson River Trading and Hastings, while the UK government's Sovereign AI Fund has also backed the company. Olix has appointed Matt Briers, the former chief financial officer of UK fintech company Wise, as its CFO.

The company now employs more than 140 people across London, Bristol, Toronto and Austin. It plans to finalize its chip designs later this year and begin delivering products to customers in 2027.

How wealthy is James Dacombe?

The sharp increase in Olix's valuation has transformed Dacombe's estimated personal wealth.

Reports have put his stake in Olix at between roughly 30 percent and 38.6 percent, although the exact figure after the latest funding round is not publicly established. Before the new financing, The Times reported that Dacombe held a 38.6 percent stake through his holding company, Bletchley Industries.

At a $3.3 billion valuation, a 30 percent stake would be worth approximately $990 million on paper, while a 38.6 percent stake would be worth about $1.27 billion before accounting for dilution, taxes and other liabilities.

That is why reports have described Dacombe as Europe's youngest self-made billionaire. The figure, however, represents the estimated value of his private-company holdings rather than cash he can readily access.

His wealth also extends beyond Olix. Dacombe owns a reported 12 percent stake in CoMind, although the company's current valuation has not been disclosed.

What comes next for Dacombe?

Dacombe is now racing to turn Olix's valuation into a commercial business. The company plans to complete its chip design, known as a “tape-out,” later this year before moving into manufacturing. It expects to deliver its first products to customers in 2027.

Olix faces well-funded competitors, including US startup Etched and other European AI chip companies such as Fractile. The market is also being closely watched as investors debate whether the enormous spending on AI infrastructure can deliver sufficient returns.

For Dacombe, the bet is that the next phase of AI computing will require something different from today's dominant hardware model: specialized chips built for specific workloads and connected efficiently enough to work together.

At 25, he is already betting on what that next generation of AI infrastructure will look like.
