TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States (US) and Lebanon have officially requested Israel to temporarily halt its attacks on Lebanese territory ahead of direct negotiations scheduled to take place next week in Washington.
According to the Axios report on Friday, April 10, 2026, two sources familiar with the discussions mentioned that the Lebanese government requested Israel to demonstrate a "gesture" by pausing the air strikes before the negotiations begin. The request was conveyed through the United States as the mediator. Washington is said to support this step and encourage Israel to respond positively.
However, as of now, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not made a decision. An unnamed Israeli official affirmed their country's position by stating, "There is no ceasefire."
Heading Towards Direct Talks in Washington
As cited in Anadolu, direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel are scheduled to begin next Tuesday at the United States Department of State. This meeting will bring together the ambassadors of both countries for their first direct talks.
Prior to this, the two parties had a trilateral phone call with one of the advisors to the United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. Following the discussion, Lebanon expressed an agreement to meet and discuss the announcement of a ceasefire.
However, differences in stance remain evident. Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, stated that Israel is willing to "agreed to begin formal peace negotiations" with the Lebanese government but "refused to discuss a ceasefire with the Hezbollah terrorist organization."
Dispute over Ceasefire
The issue of Israel's attacks on Lebanon has become one of the obstacles in a broader dynamic, including in the relations between the United States (US) and Iran. Tehran views Israel's attacks as a violation of the ceasefire agreement with Washington, intended to ease regional conflicts.
However, the United States government denies that Lebanon is included in the scope of that agreement. Meanwhile, Iran and the mediator Pakistan assert the opposite, stating that Lebanon should be covered by the agreement. On the other hand, Lebanon states that the ceasefire can only be achieved through direct negotiations between the Lebanese government and Israel, not through external pressure.
