US-Backed Gaza Aid Suspended After Israel Kills Dozens at Distribution Site

1 day ago 8

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), supported by the United States, will not provide any aid on Wednesday, June 4, 2025. As reported by CNA, this decision is made to urge Israel to enhance the safety of Palestinian civilians beyond the perimeters of aid distribution sites.

This action was taken after dozens of Palestinians seeking aid were shot dead by the Israeli military.

"Our top priority remains ensuring the safety and dignity of civilians receiving aid," said a GHF spokesperson.

GHF stated that they have asked the Israeli military to "guide foot traffic in a way that minimizes confusion or escalation risks" near the military perimeters.

They also claimed to have developed clearer guidelines for civilians and enhanced training to support the safety of Palestinian civilians.

An Israeli military spokesperson warned Palestinian civilians not to move in areas leading to the GHF distribution site on Wednesday, considering it a "combat zone."

The Israeli military stated on Tuesday that they fired at a group of people they deemed a threat near the GHF food aid distribution site. The International Red Cross Committee stated that at least 27 people were killed and dozens were injured. GHF stated that the incident was "well beyond" its site.

Palestinians collecting GHF food boxes on Tuesday described a chaotic situation, with no one overseeing the aid handover or checking IDs, as crowds of people scrambled for aid.

The UN Security Council will also vote on Wednesday regarding the demand for a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian Hamas fighters, as well as humanitarian access in Gaza. The region is lacking aid due to Israel's 11-week blockade amid chaos and bloodshed as the population suffers from starvation.

"It is unacceptable. Civilians are risking – and in several instances losing – their lives just trying to get food," said UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric on Tuesday.

Dujarric emphasized that the aid distribution model supported by the US and Israel is a "recipe for disaster, which is exactly what is going on."

This model is operated by the newly formed GHF, which started operating in the enclave a week ago. They claimed on Tuesday to have distributed more than seven million meals from three alleged safe distribution sites.

Acting Executive Director of GHF John Acree urged humanitarian workers in Gaza: "Work with us and we will get your aid delivered to those who are depending on it."

The UN and other aid groups refuse to collaborate with GHF, deeming it non-neutral and its distribution model militarizing aid.

GHF uses private US security and logistics companies to deliver aid to distribution sites. Its staff consists of mercenaries who were former soldiers in the US military.

This is the latest in a series of efforts to deliver more aid to the enclave, where experts say the entire population of about 2.1 million is at risk of starvation.

Jordan last year spearheaded airborne aid delivery, while the US once set up a floating aid dock, but it faced various challenges, mainly from Israel.

The UN has long blamed Israel and lawlessness in the enclave for obstructing aid delivery to Gaza and its distribution across the war zone. Israel accuses Hamas of stealing aid, which the group and international organizations deny.

Genocide in Gaza has been raging since 2023, after Hamas fighters stormed Israel on October 7, 2023, bringing about 250 hostages back to the enclave, according to Israel's count.

Israel responded with a military operation that has killed more than 54,400 Palestinians, the majority being women and children.
