TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta Islamic State University (UIN Jakarta) has regulated the use of Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) in academic and non-academic activities on campus. This regulation is stated in Rector's Decree No. 127 of 2025 concerning the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
"The use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology is no longer just theoretical; it has become official policy," said Khodijah Hulliyah, Director of the Artificial Intelligence and Literacy Innovation Institute (ALII) in an official written statement quoted on Thursday, June 5, 2025.
Several significant aspects of the use of artificial intelligence at UIN Jakarta are related to academic writing ethics. Students who utilize AI are required to clearly attribute it, both in daily assignments, theses, and academic publications.
UIN Jakarta is implementing this as a boundary for using AI as a tool and to prevent plagiarism practices. "We have established clear guidelines to ensure that AI supports the learning process rather than providing a loophole for cheating," said Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Ahmad Tholabi in the same statement.
The use of AI in exams is also strictly regulated. Students are allowed to use AI if the relevant faculties establish specific protocols, including verification mechanisms to ensure the authenticity of students' competencies.
The regulation of AI usage at UIN Jakarta also covers lecturers and educational staff. They will be given space to utilize AI in curriculum design, material preparation, reporting efficiency, and campus activity planning.
Before issuing regulations on using AI on campus, UIN Jakarta first formed ALLI, or the Artificial Intelligence and Literacy Innovation Institute. This institution serves as a center for AI research, innovation, and literacy training. The launch of ALLI was officially announced last November.
Ahmad Tholabi emphasized that the use of technology at UIN Jakarta will always be accompanied by the basic values of Islam - honesty, justice, and intellectual integrity. According to him, AI does help academic communities save time in research and enrich teaching materials. "However, the humanistic guidance that lecturers provide remains irreplaceable," he said.
