TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tsunami waves triggered by an 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula have reached the coasts of Hawaii and California, United States.
On Wednesday, July 30, 2025, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported that tsunami waves were impacting the Hawaii region and urged immediate action to protect lives and property.
Earlier, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) ordered all commercial vessels in Hawaii ports to evacuate the area in response to the tsunami threat.
"The Coast Guard Captain of the Port Honolulu has issued an order for evacuation of commercial vessels from all commercial harbors in the Hawaiian Islands due to the estimated arrival of tsunami waves Tuesday at 07:17 PM," the USCG stated, as reported by outlets such as USA Today and Antara.
"So far we have not seen a wave of consequence, which is a great relief to us. It's kind of a blessing to not be reporting any damage," said Hawaii Governor Josh Green during a press conference held about an hour after the first wave was expected to arrive.
In California, a tsunami wave measuring 1.09 meters was recorded in Crescent City, Northern California, according to the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center.
Tsunami warnings remain in effect from Cape Mendocino to the Oregon border.
In Arena Cove, wave height nearly doubled from 0.48 meters to 0.9 meters in the latest readings.
Late Tuesday night, U.S. President Donald Trump took to social media to issue a warning about the tsunami.
"Due to a massive earthquake that occurred in the Pacific Ocean, a Tsunami Warning is in effect for those living in Hawaii,," he wrote on X. "... STAY STRONG AND STAY SAFE!"
Millions of residents in Japan, Russia, and parts of the U.S. West Coast have been ordered to evacuate following the massive quake.
In Japan alone, evacuation orders were issued for 1.9 million people. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that a 1.3-meter tsunami wave reached Iwate Prefecture in the country’s north.
The 8.8-magnitude earthquake, which struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, is the strongest recorded in the region since 1952 and the most powerful globally since the 2011 Japan quake.
In response to the disaster, the Sakhalin Regional Government declared a state of emergency in the Severo-Kurilsky District.
