TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto asked New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to send English teachers to Indonesia. The President plans to expand English language schools or courses for potential Indonesian migrant workers preparing to work overseas.
"I request that if there are teachers from New Zealand who can help us. We want to add schools or English language courses for our workers who wish to go abroad," Prabowo stated after a bilateral meeting with Luxon on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Gyeongju, South Korea, on Friday, October 31, 2025, as monitored via the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel.
The President also expressed a desire to send more Indonesian students to study medicine and dentistry in New Zealand, noting the country’s strong need for doctors and dentists.
During the meeting, the two leaders also highlighted the importance of expanding market access and increasing bilateral trade, which reached US$1.91 billion in 2024.
Prabowo further noted a commitment between the two nations to continue strengthening their close cooperation, stating that bilateral trade has increased by 10 percent annually over the last five years. "Our bilateral trade has consistently increased over the last five years, almost 10 percent each year, but I am confident that we can do even better," Prabowo added.
On the same occasion, PM Luxon emphasized New Zealand's commitment to strengthening trade relations. Luxon also appreciated Indonesia's support for enhancing the ASEAN and New Zealand partnership, alongside various other regional cooperations.
"With the increase in ASEAN Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), and the update of the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA), we now have a strong regional mechanism to implement what we discussed in Peru last year regarding how to accelerate trade relations between the two countries," Luxon said.
Prabowo Subianto attended the 2025 APEC Summit at the Hwabaek International Convention Centre (HICO), Gyeongju, South Korea, on Friday, October 31, 2025. He had arrived in South Korea on Thursday, October 30, 2025, accompanied by Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
