Trump Unveils 'Liberation Day' Reciprocal Tariffs, Indonesian Goods Affected

21 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, JakartaPresident of the US, Donald Trump, announced "Liberation Day" on Wednesday, April 2, 2025. With this new policy, Trump is imposing reciprocal tariffs on goods entering the U.S. in what he called the efforts to “Make America Wealthy Again.”

Citing Antara, Trump believed that this policy would liberate the United States from various unfair trade practices and global trade imbalances. He referred to the imposition of tariffs as a declaration of economic independence.

With the global tariff policy in place, the U.S. government will reaffirm the America First policy, aimed at increasing manufacturing and job opportunities while reducing the trade deficit.

According to CNN, Trump announced a sweeping 10 percent tariff on all imports to the United States, while imposing higher tariffs for goods from about 60 countries with a high trade deficit with the U.S.

Countries subject to high tariffs include China and the European Union, which will face new duties of 34 percent and 20 percent, respectively.

Foreign countries, including long-standing U.S. allies, already prepared countermeasures in response to U.S. tariffs. This is feared to trigger a global trade war, potentially leading to increased inflation and burdening U.S. consumers.

"We will charge them approximately half of what they are — and have — been charging us. So the tariffs will be not a full reciprocal," said Trump from the Rose Garden on Wednesday afternoon, April 3, 2025. "I could have done that, I guess, but it would’ve been tough for a lot of countries. We didn’t want to do that."

The base 10 percent tariff will take effect on Saturday, April 6. Higher tariffs will come into effect on April 9, and will not add to the tariffs previously announced on steel, aluminum, and automobiles.

A 25 percent tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada that do not comply with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement will remain in place until Trump decides that issues related to fentanyl and illegal immigration have been resolved.

If this happens, Canada and Mexico would be subject to the current government trade approach. White House senior officials said Trump also wants to impose separate tariffs on semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, and critical minerals, which will be announced at a later date.

US Imposes 32 Percent Import Tariffs on Indonesian Goods

According to a post from the White House on Instagram, Indonesia ranks eighth on the list of countries subject to reciprocal tariffs, at a 32 percent rate.

Based on the list, Indonesia is not the only country in Southeast Asia affected by U.S trade. There are also Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand, with reciprocal tariffs of 24 percent, 49 percent, 46 percent, and 36 percent, respectively.

On the other hand, the tariff hike will result in higher costs for importers based in the U.S. Many businesses say they are preparing to face the impact of Trump's latest actions.

"It's concerning, it's going to be expensive, it's going to require us all to make decisions," said Benjamin Colvin, president and co-founder of Devil's Foot Brewing in Asheville, North Carolina.

Trump's tariffs will affect a large number of companies, including grocery stores that sell various imported goods. "Our food system is intricately linked with global markets — including products not grown in the United States like bananas or seasonal items — which helps keep prices down while providing American shoppers year-round access to safe, nutritious food," said Leslie Sarasin, president and CEO of The Food Industry Association.
