Trump to Hit Indonesia with 32% Tariffs Starting August 1

4 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday, local time, July 7, sent a letter to the leaders of Indonesia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, and Thailand to notify about the levies on their exports to the U.S. The tariffs will take effect on August 1, 2025.

The letter indicates that as of August 1, 2025, the U.S. will impose a 32 percent tariff on Indonesia, 36 percent on Cambodia and Thailand, and 35 percent on Bangladesh.

Trump's letter came after the leader announced on April 2 the sweeping reciprocal tariffs, including on Indonesia. At that time, Trump imposed a 32 percent trade tariff on Indonesia, which was suspended pending U.S. negotiations with the governments of many tariff-affected countries. However, on July 7, 2025, as the 90-day pause's deadline looms, Trump announced the new tariff.

Similar to other countries, Trump warned the leaders of Indonesia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, and Thailand not to retaliate against the U.S. tariffs. Trump threatened to impose additional increases on top of the existing tariffs, according to the letter.

Trump also stated that goods shipped to the U.S. from Bosnia and Serbia will be subjected to tariffs of 30 percent and 35 percent, respectively, starting from August 1. "Starting on August 1, 2025, we will charge Serbia a Tariff of only 35% on any and all Serbian products sent into the United States, separate from all Sectoral Tariffs," Trump said in his letter to Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.

"Goods transshipped to evade a higher Tariff will be subject to that higher Tariff," he said in the letter.

Subsequently, goods from Bosnia will be subjected to a 30 percent tariff, Trump said in his letter to Zeljka Cvijanovic, the Chair of the Bosnia Presidency.

If these countries decide to raise tariffs on American goods in retaliation, Trump threatens to add the same amount on top of the announced U.S. tariffs.

Previously, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that Indonesia's delegation team had submitted a second offer to the United States Trade Representative's Office (USTR) during the tariff negotiation process
