TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that King Charles III of England is likely to support the United States in its operation against Iran.
"If that were up to him, he would have probably helped us with Iran," Trump claimed on Wednesday as reported by NBC News.
Trump made the statement while sitting in the Oval Office with astronauts who had just returned from the Artemis II space mission. He praised Charles, calling him a "good friend" and describing him as "fantastic."
During his speech at the state banquet on Tuesday night with King Charles and Queen Camilla, Trump also referred to the Iran war as "a little work in the Middle East." He then said the two leaders agreed that Iran should not have nuclear weapons.
The English kings and queens are bound by rules and norms that prevent them from taking overtly political positions. When asked about Trump's comments on Iran, a Buckingham Palace spokesperson told NBC News, "The king is naturally mindful of his government’s long-standing and well-known position on the prevention of nuclear proliferation."
U.S.-UK Tensions
Although members of the British royal family do not have overtly political roles, Charles' visit comes as tensions between the UK and the U.S. worsen. Earlier in March, Trump criticized UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer for not being more supportive of the war in Iran.
"This is not Winston Churchill we're dealing with," Trump said.
The U.S. President also criticized Starmer over migration and energy policies.
On April 1, Trump said he was seriously considering withdrawing the U.S. from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) after allies refused to join the U.S.-Israel war against Iran.
He stated that he no longer sees Europe as a reliable defense partner after European countries refused his call to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz.
