TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chairperson of the Indonesia Halal Lifestyle Center, Sapta Nirwandar, said that former President Donald Trump’s decision to maintain a 32 percent import tariff on Indonesian products is unlikely to significantly impact the country’s halal export performance.
"The halal market is very large, and when we look at our exports to America for halal products, the amount is small," Sapta told reporters at the Bappenas office in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
Sapta, who previously served as Deputy Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, explained that Indonesia mainly targets halal product exports to European countries and members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
"Out of the trillions of dollars, we have a significant presence in other markets," he said.
Reem El Shafaki, a partner at DinarStandard, a global research firm focused on the Islamic economy, also noted Indonesia’s strong position in the halal food sector, particularly in the OIC and Brazil. "Brazil and OIC countries are among the top exporters. There are several successful OIC food exporters," El Shafaki said.
According to the State of the Global Islamic Economy (SGIE) report, Indonesia ranks third in the global halal industry for 2024/2025, maintaining its position for a third consecutive year. Malaysia remains in first place, followed by Saudi Arabia.
The same report highlights Indonesia’s achievements across various halal-related sectors. Indonesia ranks first in Islamic fashion and holds second place in both Muslim-friendly tourism and the pharmaceutical and cosmetics sectors.
The SGIE report also shows that total investment in the halal industry, including Islamic finance, reached US$5.8 billion in 2023/2024. Of that amount, Indonesia received US$1.6 billion, overtaking the United Arab Emirates as the top recipient of halal industry investment.
This placed Indonesia in the top spot in terms of investment value. El Shafaki attributed this success to supportive government policies and the development of a strong halal ecosystem.
Indonesia is also listed among the top 10 halal product exporters, according to the SGIE. Despite this, she noted that Indonesia still has the potential to increase its share in the export market.
