Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an alert for coastal communities to stay away from the shoreline following a powerful earthquake that struck Russia on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.
An updated magnitude 8.7 tectonic earthquake shook the eastern coast of Kamchatka, Russia, at 6:24:50 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB). The earthquake's epicenter was located at coordinates 52.51° N and 160.26° E, at a depth of 18 kilometers.
"Based on reports from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC), this earthquake has the potential to cause a tsunami in the regions of Russia, Japan, Alaska, the Philippines, Hawaii, and Guam," said Daryono, BMKG's Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis, in a statement released on Wednesday.
2. Japan's Hokkaido Hit by Tsunami After Powerful Russia Earthquake
The powerful earthquake that struck Russia's far eastern coast has had a significant impact on Japan, with the first tsunami waves reaching the country.
A tsunami with a height of approximately 30 centimeters has already hit the main northern island of Hokkaido, according to NHK broadcaster, as reported by Al Arabiya. NHK has warned that subsequent waves could be much larger.
The Japan Meteorological Agency had previously forecast that waves as high as three meters were expected along the northern and eastern coasts of Japan, extending as far south as Wakayama in Osaka.
In response to the quake, workers at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, which was devastated by a tsunami in 2011, were evacuated.
3. Powerful Earthquake Hits Eastern Russia, Triggering 8.7 Magnitude Quake and 4-Meter Tsunami
Earthquake with a magnitude of 8.7 struck the Kamchatka Peninsula in far eastern Russia. As reported by Sky News, the earthquake caused a four-meter tsunami in the Kamchatka Peninsula. The earthquake caused several buildings to collapse and residents to be evacuated.
A tsunami warning has been issued for Japan, Hawaii, and parts of Alaska in the U.S. Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov said, 'Today's earthquake is serious and the strongest in decades.'
Russian news agency TASS reported from the nearby largest city, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, that many people were running into the streets.
Several pieces of furniture inside homes were damaged, such as collapsing cabinets and broken mirrors. Cars were shaking on the roads and balconies in buildings were shaking heavily.
