Thailand, Cambodia Military Chiefs Discuss Recent Border Clashes

1 day ago 5

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The military chiefs of Thailand and Cambodia met on Thursday, May 29, 2025, after a Cambodian soldier was killed in clashes at the border.

As reported by The Japan Times, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet wrote on Facebook that he hoped the meeting between the two military chiefs "will yield positive results."

Hun Manet, as cited by Al Jazeera, also told Cambodians not to "panic over unverified material being circulated" and reassured his country that he did not desire any conflict between Cambodian and Thai forces.

"For this reason, I hope that the upcoming meeting between the Cambodian and Thai army commanders will produce positive results to preserve stability and good military communication between the two countries, as we have done in the past," said Hun Manet, who is currently visiting Tokyo.

"Even though I am in Japan … the command system and hierarchy for major military operations such as troop movements remain under my full responsibility as prime minister," he asserted.

Thailand's The Nation also reported that Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra spoke with his counterpart, Hun Manet, and both tried to ease the tension of the dispute.

"We don't want this to escalate," Paetongtarn said.

Thailand's Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai told reporters that talks would be held on Thursday afternoon, local time.

A Cambodian soldier was killed on Wednesday after a shootout with Thai soldiers at the border, a rare death along the long-sensitive border.

His death came as Cambodian and Thai leaders attended the Southeast Asian summit, where the regional ASEAN group pledged to enhance cooperation.

"There will be talks today," Thai Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai told reporters on Thursday, adding that there had been "misunderstandings by both sides."

Cambodia and Thailand have long disputed their over 800-kilometer-long border, mostly demarcated during French rule in Indochina.

Bloody military clashes between Cambodia and Thailand erupted in 2008 over the Preah Vihear temple near the border.

Disputes over a piece of land next to the 900-year-old temple led to sporadic violence for years, resulting in at least 28 deaths before the International Court of Justice (ICC) ruled that the contested area belonged to Cambodia.
