TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Thailand military has accused Cambodia of violating the ceasefire on Tuesday, July 29, 2025. On Monday night, the two conflicting countries agreed to a ceasefire mediated by Malaysia.
As reported by CNA, Thailand stated that the clashes continued despite an agreement to end the bloody battles that have plagued the border shrouded in forests. However, Cambodia's Defense Ministry spokesperson, Maly Socheata, emphasized that there were no armed clashes in any area.
After the peace negotiations in Malaysia on Monday, both parties agreed that an unconditional ceasefire would start at midnight. The conflict stemmed from the dispute over several ancient temples in the disputed zone along their 800-kilometer border.
"At the time the agreement took effect, Thailand detected that Cambodian forces had launched armed attacks in several areas within Thai territory," said Thai military spokesperson Winthai Suwaree.
"This is a deliberate violation of the agreement and a clear effort to undermine mutual trust," he added in a statement.
"Thailand is compelled to respond appropriately, and exercise its legitimate right to self-defense."
Shortly after, Acting Prime Minister of Thailand Phumtham Wechayachai said the border was calm after a minor clash.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet wrote on Facebook on Tuesday morning. "The frontlines have calmed down since the ceasefire at midnight."
Another spokesperson for the Thai army, Colonel Richa Suksuwanon, said negotiations were ongoing between the two parties. He added that military commanders are likely to meet at 10 a.m. local time.
In Samraong city, Cambodia, which is located 20 km from the border, the sound of explosions stopped 30 minutes before midnight. By dawn, the situation started to calm down.
Jets, rockets, and artillery have killed at least 38 people since last Thursday. The attacks have caused nearly 300,000 others to flee.
