TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Thai military has once again accused Cambodian forces of violating the ceasefire agreement in three separate locations along the disputed border. As reported by Arab News and CNA, Bangkok warned that continued aggression from Cambodia could force Thai forces to respond more forcefully.
Thailand stated that Cambodian forces fired upon positions in the province of Sisaket, northeast Thailand, at the northern border of Cambodia. "Cambodian forces used small arms and grenade launchers, prompting Thailand to respond in self-defense," said Thai military spokesperson Major General Winthai Suvaree to reporters.
"This was the second incident since the agreement and reflects a behavior that does not respect agreements, destroys de-escalation efforts and hampers trust between the two countries."
Thailand's government spokesperson, Jirayu Huangsab, reported clashes last night. In a statement, he said: "The Thai side maintained control of the situation" and "general conditions along the border are reported to be normal" since 8 a.m. local time.
Cambodia denied the allegations, stating that it remains committed to the ceasefire and requested observers.
"Cambodia strongly rejects the ceasefire accusations as false, misleading and harmful to the fragile trust-building process," said Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Chum Sounry in a press conference, adding that the government supports independent monitoring and observation mechanisms.
The accusations come less than two days after the two governments agreed to a mediated ceasefire in Malaysia, which took effect on Monday midnight. This ceasefire aimed to stop the fighting and prevent the deadliest escalation of conflict between the neighboring countries in over a decade. Five days of fierce fighting had killed at least 43 people and displaced over 300,000 civilians on both sides.
The ceasefire occurred following sustained pressure from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and President of the United States Donald Trump, with the latter warning the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia that trade negotiations would not progress if the fighting continued.
Thailand and Cambodia face tariffs of 36 percent on their goods in the U.S., their largest export market, unless tariff reductions can be negotiated. After the ceasefire agreement was reached, Trump said he had spoken with both leaders and instructed his trade team to restart tariff negotiations.
The ceasefire, which also agreed to halt troop movements, paved the way for a high-level military meeting involving defense ministers on Monday, August 4, 2025, in Cambodia. There were no reports of heavy artillery exchanges, but there were also no reports of troop withdrawals by either side.
In a temple in Surin, Thailand, serving as a shelter and public kitchen, 65-year-old volunteer Thanin Kittiworranun said the refugees remained in uncertainty.
"We don't believe Cambodia will hold the ceasefire," said the 65-year-old man.
However, a foreign journalist in Cambodia, who had heard artillery blasts since the fighting began last Thursday, reported not hearing any explosions from the start of the ceasefire until Wednesday morning.
On Tuesday, a Thai military spokesperson announced that the Thai military had met with their Cambodian counterparts.
Thai Prime Minister's Office official Phumtham Wechayachai said "there is no escalation" on Tuesday, with Cambodian Ministry of Defense spokesperson Maly Socheata also saying "no armed clashes against each other in any regions."
According to Beijing, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong hosted a meeting with Thai and Cambodian officials in Shanghai. "Both reaffirmed to China their commitment to abide by the ceasefire consensus."
