Texas Flood Disaster: 51 Lives Lost, 27 Students Remain Missing

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The death toll in the severe floods in Texas, United States, continues to rise. On Sunday morning WIB, July 6, 2025, the death toll reached 51, with 27 female students still reported missing.

The flood occurred on Friday, July 4, with the worst affected area being Kerr County. Most of the casualties were found near Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp, which was swept away by the flood. There were school children camping there, totaling 700 people. To date, 27 of the students participating in the camp are still unaccounted for.

On Saturday local time, rescue teams were still combing through the devastated Texas landscape, strewn with fallen trees, overturned vehicles, and debris filled with mud. The search parties utilized helicopters, boats, and unmanned aircraft.

Governor Greg Abbott pledged that the authorities would work around the clock and stated that new areas were being surveyed as the water receded. He declared Sunday as a day of prayer for the state. "We will find them," he said.

Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick stated that the exact number of missing victims was unknown because at the time of the incident, many visitors were present for the Independence Day celebration by the river. "We don't know how many people were in the tents next to, in the small trailers next to, the rental homes next to," he said on Fox News Live, as quoted by Al Jazeera.

The midnight flood over the July 4th weekend took many by surprise. Local authorities and relevant agencies faced criticism for being deemed inadequate in providing timely warnings and disaster preparedness.

On Saturday morning, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the federal government was collaborating with state and local officials to respond to the flood. "Our Brave Emergency Response Teams are on site and doing the best they can," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. He added that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem would soon be deployed to the field.

The weekend disaster serves as a reminder of the devastating floods nearly 40 years ago along the Guadalupe River. In 1987, a bus and a van leaving a church camp encountered a flood, and 10 teenagers drowned while trying to escape.
