TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Another powerful earthquake struck Indonesia's region today, Saturday, August 15, 2026. The latest shaking, recorded at 6.4 magnitude, shook parts of North Sumatra and Aceh.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the maximum intensity was measured at V on the MMI scale.
According to BMKG, the earthquake occurred at 5:54 p.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB), with the epicenter located inland, 11 kilometers southeast of Simalungun in North Sumatra, and 168-kilometer depth.
"This is a moderate earthquake triggered by a plate subduction activity," read a written statement distributed by BMKG's Director of Earthquake and Tsunami, Wijayanto, after the earthquake.
Nevertheless, the modeling results did not indicate any tsunami risks, according to Antara.
As of 06:16 p.m. WIB, no aftershocks were detected as a result of the quake.
According to BMKG, the intensity of the earthquake was felt at V on the MMI scale, including in Tebingtinggi City and Kabanjahe City. At this scale, tremors were felt by almost all residents, and many people woke up. The earthquake also caused pottery to break, objects tossed, pillars and large objects to sway, and even the pendulum of a bell to stop.
Several other areas were affected by the same quake, measuring IV on the MMI scale, including Simalungun, Pematangsiantar City, and Pangururan City. At this scale, the tremors were felt by many people inside their homes, and by a few people outside. The earthquake also caused pottery to break, windows and doors to rattle, and walls to vibrate.
This powerful shaking came after a deadly earthquake struck Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, on Saturday morning. Measuring at 7.7 magnitude, the shaking triggered a minor tsunami along several coastlines in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, and the coast of South Sulawesi.
As of this afternoon, 38 people had died, two were seriously injured, and 11 others suffered minor injuries as a result of the earthquake, which measured at VII on the MMI scale.
Between the two strong earthquakes, BMKG also recorded several felt tremors in Bandung Regency, West Java, and Muna Regency, Southeast Sulawesi.
