Russia's Kamchatka Shaken by 6.7M Aftershock Following Massive Quake

22 hours ago 7

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An aftershock measuring 6.7 in magnitude was recorded on Thursday, July 31, 2025, a day after a powerful earthquake struck Kamchatka, Russia, according to the Integrated Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the Kamchatka branch.

"The depth of the earthquake (km): 58.4 [36.3 miles]. Magnitude: 6.7," the agency said in a statement.

The epicenter was located 178 kilometers (110 miles) from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the administrative center of Kamchatka, the agency said via Telegram, as cited by Anadolu.

Tremors were felt in the city, and several buildings collapsed, according to the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations’ regional office. No casualties were reported.

A day earlier, an 8.8-magnitude earthquake had struck off the Kamchatka coast, the strongest in the region since 1952 and the most powerful globally since the 2011 Japan quake.

Since then, Russian scientists have recorded more than 100 aftershocks with magnitudes over 5.0.

The seismic activity triggered a tsunami, prompting warnings in the Kuril Islands. Japan also issued alerts, followed by a major tsunami threat extending across much of the eastern Pacific.

Waves up to two meters reached Peru’s coast. Easter Island (Rapa Nui) also saw waves, though they were not considered dangerous.

In Chile, authorities began evacuating residents from coastal areas on the mainland due to the threat.

A state of emergency was declared in the Severo-Kurilsky District, according to the Sakhalin Region government.
