Putin, Netanyahu Discuss Iran and Syria Amid Rising Middle East Tensions

TEMPO.CO, JakartaRussian President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday to discuss rising tensions in the Middle East, with a particular focus on Iran and Syria, according to a statement from the Kremlin.

"The conversation between the two leaders concerns the issue of Iran," the Kremlin said on July 28, as reported by Anadolu.

During the call, Moscow reiterated its commitment to resolving regional conflicts through peaceful dialogue. Putin stressed the importance of preserving Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

He also underscored the need to promote internal political stability by ensuring the rights and legitimate interests of all minority groups are respected.

Russia remains a key ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who is reportedly in Moscow with his family. The Kremlin continues to operate two military bases in Syria, maintaining its long-standing presence in the country.

The leaders also addressed recent tensions between Israel and Iran. According to the Kremlin, Putin expressed Russia’s readiness to help mediate a negotiated settlement on the Iranian nuclear issue.

While Russia maintains strong ties with Iran, particularly in the defense sector amid its ongoing war in Ukraine, it has also cultivated a working relationship with Israel, home to a significant Russian-speaking population.

Russia is currently the only foreign country actively involved in Iran’s nuclear program, with Russian engineers operating Iran’s sole nuclear power plant in Bushehr, located in the country's south.

These diplomatic discussions took place against the backdrop of growing concerns over Iran's nuclear ambitions, following recent attacks by Israel and the United States on Iranian nuclear facilities. As reported by Al Arabiya, international diplomatic efforts to address the issue are intensifying.

The Putin-Netanyahu phone call came just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump met British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer in northern Scotland. During the meeting, Trump commented on Iran’s recent behavior, stating that Tehran had sent "very bad signals, very nasty signals.”

Trump responded with a strong warning. “And they shouldn’t be doing that. We wiped out their nuclear possibilities. They can start again. If they do, we’ll wipe it out faster than you can wave your finger at it,” he said.

Earlier, Trump had warned that the United States would launch another strike on Iran's nuclear facilities if Tehran attempted to restart any sites previously targeted by American forces last month.

Meanwhile, Russian media reports made no mention of separate diplomatic efforts by France and Saudi Arabia, who on July 28 pushed for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict during discussions at the United Nations in New York.
