TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto will join Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his visit to Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta. Indonesia and India have agreed to collaborate on the temple's restoration.
Prabowo and Modi are scheduled to visit Indonesia's largest Hindu site on Wednesday, July 7, 2026.
"Tomorrow, alongside President Prabowo, I will inaugurate the conservation of Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta," Modi said in a joint statement with Prabowo at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 6, 2026.
According to Modi, Prambanan Tempe symbolizes the shared culture between Indonesia and India. "The temple is over a thousand years old and is a symbol of the culture we share," he said.
Prabowo, meanwhile, extended his appreciation to the restoration plan with India. "We welcome the restoration and conservation of the Prambanan Temple Complex, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site," he said.
Minister of Culture Fadli Zon said the restoration plan at Prambanan Temple will include the perwara, or smaller shrines, which complement the three main temples at the complex. "In particular, India is keen on Prambanan because it is one of the largest Hindu temples, with 3 main temples and around 200 perwara," he said.
According to the Gerindra politician, Indonesia has conducted revitalization at all main temples at Prambanan, but only six perwara have been restored thus far.
While Fadli said he's not aware of the total value of the restoration project, he shared hopes that it would kick off swiftly with the assistance of Indian expertise. Meanwhile, the Indonesian government still needs to make assessments on each perwara at the temple complex.
Visiting Indonesia since July 6, PM Modi was welcomed by President Prabowo at the Merdeka Palace on Tuesday. The two leaders held bilateral talks, followed by a state luncheon.
The meeting resulted in 16 memorandums of understanding, encompassing various sectors, from defense and culture to technology.
One notable agreement was between the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the Indian Space Research Organization, which focuses on space exploration.
