Short on Gas Networks

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Muhammad Hafiz can barely remember the last time he bought liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in a cylinder. Since 2021, the 34-year-old has used a household gas network, or jargas, to meet his family's energy needs in Grand Depok City, Depok, West Java.

Hafiz initially learned from his neighborhood association leaders that Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN) was offering to connect homes to the gas network. "The offer was attractive because the installation of the pipes and the connection to the stove were free," he said on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.

Since being connected to the network, Hafiz has stopped using LPG cylinders. He now pays Rp120,000 to Rp150,000 (about US$6.7-8.4) a month for gas. The expense, he said, is lower than the Rp210,000 to Rp240,000 (US$11.8-13.5) he used to spend on 12 kilogram Bright Gas cylinders.

Besides being cheaper, having gas delivered through pipes has made his kitchen much more convenient. To turn the gas on or off, Hafiz simply turns a valve on the meter. He no longer has to buy and carry cylinders home from a neighborhood shop or convenience store. His kitchen also has more storage space because his family no longer needs to keep a primary or spare cylinder there.
