Prabowo Sets Minimum 92% Revenue Share for Ride-Hailing Drivers

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto signed a new profit-sharing regulation for online motorcycle taxi drivers, increasing their share of earnings under a policy aimed at improving welfare in the ride-hailing sector.

Prabowo announced the measure during a speech marking International Workers’ Day, or May Day, at the National Monument (Monas) in Jakarta on Friday, May 1, 2026.

“The income distribution, which was originally 80 percent for drivers, is now a minimum of 92 percent for drivers,” he said in front of thousands of workers.

The chairperson of the Gerindra Party said the policy had been formalized through Presidential Regulation No. 27 of 2026 on the Protection of Online Transportation Workers. Under the regulation, platform companies may take only an 8 percent commission, down from as much as 20 percent previously.

Prabowo added that the regulation also includes occupational accident protection and health insurance coverage through the national health scheme.

“BPJS Health will be provided, including health insurance,” said the former defense minister.

In the same address, Prabowo said his administration has sought to align itself with workers’ interests, including through holiday bonuses for ride-hailing drivers and couriers, as well as expanded subsidized housing programs for workers.

This year, labor unions and federations across Indonesia held May Day commemorations on Friday, May 1, 2026. In Jakarta, the event was split between two main locations: the Monas area in Central Jakarta and the House of Representatives (DPR) complex.

The Confederation of All Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPSI) and the Labor Party held a gathering at Monas, which took the form of a celebratory event attended by Prabowo rather than a protest rally.

KSPSI President Andi Gani Nena Wea said the president was expected to deliver “surprises” for workers during the event, including announcements related to online motorcycle taxi drivers, International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions, and broader labor welfare policies.

“It is related to online motorcycle taxis, the ratification of ILO conventions, and labor welfare policies,” Andi said at a press conference in Jakarta on April 29.

He added that Prabowo would also distribute gifts such as T-shirts and umbrellas during the event, with the T-shirts reportedly designed by Prabowo himself.

However, several labor groups declined to attend the Monas celebration with the government. They are part of the Labor Movement Alliance with the People, or Gebrak.

The coalition includes the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Union Alliance (KASBI), the Federation of Indonesian Labor Struggle (FPBI), the Federation of Food and Beverage Workers’ Unions (FSBMM), and other civil society groups. They staged a separate demonstration outside the DPR building in Jakarta during the May Day commemoration on Friday afternoon.

KASBI Chair Sunarno said around 10,000 people were expected to join the rally in front of parliament.

“We carry the theme of May Day with the People,” he said on April 30.

He added that the group’s action differed from the Monas event organized with the authorities, which he described as state-aligned.

“In our view, the Monas celebration is marked by mainstream narratives and the co-optation of power,” he said.
