TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto has ordered a thorough investigation into the cause of a deadly train collision involving the Argo Bromo Anggrek intercity service and a commuter line (KRL) at Bekasi Timur Station in West Java, Indonesia, emphasizing the need to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“We will immediately investigate the incident,” Prabowo said during a visit to Bekasi General Hospital on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.

He stressed that identifying the exact cause of the crash is essential not only for accountability but also as a basis for improving railway safety standards.

Alongside the investigation, the government is prioritizing the treatment and recovery of victims. Dozens of injured passengers remain hospitalized, and Prabowo said the state would provide compensation to all those affected.

“There are 54 victims still receiving treatment, and all are being well cared for. Some have already been returned to their families,” he said.

The collision occurred at Bekasi Timur Station in Bekasi City on Monday night, April 27, at around 08:57 PM local time. The latest data show at least 14 people were killed and 84 others injured in the crash.

“The deceased victims have been transported to Kramat Jati Police Hospital for identification,” said PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) President Director Bobby Rasyidin in a statement on Tuesday.

Rescue operations were still underway as of Tuesday, with several victims believed to be trapped inside the wreckage.

“There are still around three people trapped in the train. The evacuation has taken about eight hours and is being carried out very carefully,” Bobby said.

He added that the evacuation is being conducted in stages, with safety as the top priority. All carriages of the Argo Bromo Anggrek train have been cleared, and rescue teams are now preparing to handle the locomotive section.
