TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto will receive a visit from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Tuesday morning, July 29, 2025. The two will hold the 13th annual consultation between Malaysia and Indonesia.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Roliansyah Soemirat stated that the annual consultation is a communication agenda between the two highest leaders of both countries. This communication is actually an annual agenda, but it was delayed for several years due to various factors, including the Covid-19 pandemic.
"This annual consultation needs to be seen as a desire from both countries to have regular consultations and communication at the highest level," he said in an official statement on Monday, July 28, 2025.
Roy, as he is commonly called, said that the two country's leaders will discuss several issues, including bilateral cooperation, regional issues, and non-regional issues. However, Roy did not elaborate on the details of the issues to be discussed.
Anwar arrived in Jakarta on Monday evening, July 28, 2025, at around 8:00 p.m. WIB (Western Indonesian Time). In addition to meeting Prabowo, Anwar will visit the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta to respond to an invitation from ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn.
Prabowo himself had received Anwar Ibrahim at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on June 27, 2025. During the meeting, Prabowo and Anwar discussed bilateral issues, ASEAN regional issues, and global issues.
"We exchanged views and, as it turns out, in many ways, almost all of Indonesia and Malaysia's views are the same," said Prabowo in a joint press conference.
One of the important issues discussed was the Ambalat region. Prabowo and Anwar Ibrahim agreed on an approach through a joint economic cooperation scheme. "For example, regarding the Ambalat issue, we agree that while we are resolving legal issues, we want to start with economic cooperation, which we refer to as joint development. Whatever we find in the sea, we will exploit it together," said Prabowo.
