TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim are set to discuss the development of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) during the 13th annual Indonesia-Malaysia consultation. RCEP is a free trade agreement involving countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
The discussion plan was announced by Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto at the Presidential Palace Complex in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, July 29, 2025. "One of the topics is RCEP. Malaysia will host a leaders' meeting on RCEP," Airlangga said.
The former Golkar Party chairperson added that the two nations would also address bilateral relations, with both countries committed to strengthening economic, trade, and investment cooperation.
Furthermore, Airlangga confirmed that the recent Thailand-Cambodia conflict would be included in the discussion. "In the ASEAN chairmanship, it will certainly be discussed," he said.
Prabowo received Anwar Ibrahim at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Tuesday morning, July 29, 2025, ahead of their 13th annual consultation.
Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Roliansyah Soemirat explained that the annual consultation serves as a high-level communication agenda between the leaders of the two countries. While typically an annual event, it had been postponed for several years due to various factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic.
Roliansyah, also known as Roy, mentioned that the leaders would discuss a range of topics, including bilateral cooperation, regional issues, and matters outside the region. However, he did not elaborate on the specific details of these discussions.
In addition to his meeting with Prabowo, Prime Minister Anwar is scheduled to visit the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta at the invitation of ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn.
