Nintendo Delays U.S. Preorders for Switch 2 Over Tariff Concerns

6 hours ago 2

On April 2, 2025, Nintendo introduced its latest console, the Switch 2. Not even 24 hours after the global announcement, the United States government announced a new tariff policy targeting products from Japan, China, and Vietnam, the three main countries in Nintendo's supply chain.

As a result, Nintendo decided to delay the Switch 2 pre-orders in the U.S., which was originally scheduled for April 9, 2025. "Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions," Nintendo stated in Engadget as quoted from Antara last Saturday. However, the global launch schedule on June 5, 2025, remains unchanged.

The Trump administration has imposed a 34 percent import tariff on goods from China and a 46 percent tariff on products from Vietnam. These are the two countries where Nintendo primarily assembles its hardware. The new levies are expected to impact the selling price of the console in the U.S. market.

Nintendo has previously mentioned that the retail price for the Switch 2 in the U.S. is $450, or around Rp7.4 million. But the price point has faced contention from fans, who deem it too high in comparison to the first-generation switch model. Released in 2017, the model was initially priced at $300.

What is the Switch 2 Console?

The Switch 2 is Nintendo's latest hybrid console that can be played in handheld mode, reminiscent of the Game Boy era. It can also be connected to a screen and controller for a home console experience. The Nintendo Switch 2 is claimed to provide a more impressive gaming experience in handheld and TV modes.

As cited on the Nintendo website, one of the updates to the Switch 2 is its large 7.9-inch LCD screen that displays 1080p HD quality images.

The Switch 2 device will use magnetic connections, making it stronger and easier to detach from the main unit. The analog sticks are also larger and more comfortable, with larger SL and SR buttons compared to the previous model.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is equipped with the latest Surround Sound 3D audio system for realistic sound effects, even without additional audio devices. The Switch 2 speakers have been upgraded to produce clearer sound. The integrated microphone features noise-canceling technology, providing better voice communication during online gameplay.

The Switch 2's read and write speed is also higher, speeding up game loading times. In docked mode, the Switch 2 can provide a resolution of up to 4K with HDR support and is equipped with a cooling fan to maintain stable performance even during long gaming sessions.
